The vineyard is situated at an altitude of 850 metres. It is predominantly a summer rainfall region, with average January mean minimum temperatures of 13.5 degrees and a maximum average of 26.The high altitude ensures that cold winters generate a true dormancy in the vines. This, along with the extended ripening period, is generating wines of complex character and taste.
Kurrajong Downs is also a commercial cattle property running Angus and Gelbvieh cattle on 7,000 acres of the eastern slopes of the Great Dividing Range.
The Rhodes family came to the Tenterfield region in 1858 when Jonus Rhodes followed the lure of gold to the Timbarra gold fields. He continued mining in the area for the next 50 years until his death in 1898. Two generations of the Rhodes family spent their lives searching for the golden ore in the eastern ranges of the Timbarra escarpment until the 1930s when the third generation began raising beef cattle on properties east of Tenterfield.
This mining heritage is reflected in the names of the wines being produced by kurrajong downs, such as the 2002 timbarra gold Chardonnay. Each bottle has a short history of the name on the back label.

The restaurant features a cathedral ceiling with natural timber beams, a polished hardwood floor and a large glass-fronted heater set into a hearth of natural granite.
The bar and cellar door area continues the natural timber theme, with the bar top a special feature, being made of West Indian Red Cedar salvaged from a tree blown down in a storm. It attracts much comment from visitors to the cellar door.
We welcome your enquiry, whether for our fine wine, dining or a booking for a private or public function.
